Reiki was introduced by Mikao Usui (b. 1865) in Japan and was introduced to the West by Mrs. Hawayo Takata in 1937. Due to its universal nature, Reiki is obviously not bound by its Eastern origins and has become an integrated healing modality around the world.
Reiki is a universal method of healing that will benefit anyone, anywhere. This healing energy and practice is based on the concept that every living being shares this “universal life energy.” To practice Reiki, simply means that one is practising to focus and increase one’s connection to this universal life force through the attunment of unique symbols, to the highest good for all. As such, Reiki can be applied to any focus we have in life, whether it is spiritual, mental, emotional or physical.
In the context of “Reiki” the Rei means “Universal Spirit, Higher Power or God” and “Ki” refers to “Life Energy” that flows through all living things. In this manner, practicing Reiki connects the highest, divine energy to the receivers’ life force, so those giving and receiving Reiki are both guided and protected by this higher vibration that is always directed to the highest good. Reiki is not bound to one nationality, one religion or philosophy. As such, it is there to help and support all forms of life on Earth.
Its general effects are immediately felt as a sense of relaxation and stress relief. It can be administered in person, through a “laying of hands” or through distance healing, where the healer can send the Reiki energy anywhere in the world.
